How to Know if I Have an Ankle or Foot Fracture
An ankle or foot fracture isn’t always easy to tell apart from a severe ankle sprain, but there are key signs that can help you recognize when the injury may be more serious. If you’ve recently twisted your ankle or fallen and notice the following symptoms, you should see a foot and ankle specialist:
- Severe pain in the ankle or foot, especially right after an injury or fall
- Swelling and bruising that develops quickly around the ankle or foot
- Difficulty bearing weight without significant pain
- A visible deformity, as if the ankle joint seems out of place
- Tenderness to the touch around the ankle joint
- Hearing a popping or snapping noise at the time of injury
- Numbness or tingling in the foot or toes
